I wish I could tell you, but even I don’t really know. However, I’m going to tell you this story, that may offer some insight into this dilemma. You are going to exit here with the hope for the future generations or you’re going to leave here still wondering, “WHAT IS WRONG WITH TODAY’S YOUTHS? It was a nice and warm sunny day, I was standing in the doorway of my home enjoying the pleasant mid afternoon day. From a distance, I watched a group of young teenagers coming from school with their school books and bags; grouped together, talking, laughing, some of them playing tag with each other. Just a little ways down the street, there was this elderly disable man walking with a cane. His pace was slow; but what the hell, he had a valid reason. I began to hold my breath like I was anticipating sudden dome to reveal itself. I was even praying silently that the elderly disable man would survive the rush of teenagers that were embarking upon him. I secretly hoped that the horde of kids would somehow just cross over to the other side of the street leaving the Old Timer with his side of the street to himself. Guess my prayer request was a little slow at reaching God that day. These teenagers embarked upon that man like a wave of locust raping a field of newly grown wheat. They must had startle the elderly disable man because he stopped; because he stopped so fast, he started losing his balance. As I emerged from my doorway; I begin to run, well it was my version of running, to help this man. I’m watching these kids rushing pass him, oblivious to anything happening around them. They were caught in their own little World. I knew, I wasn’t going to get there fast enough. He was going down. I saw the cane drop from his frail hand; I saw his legs shaking, beginning to give out from underneath his body. I was running, but the street felt like it was getting longer and longer the more I ran. No question about it, the Old Timer was going down like the Titanic. Something happen, it caught me off guard. By now all of the teenagers had passed this disable elderly man. They had put quite a distance between him and them, but this one young teenaged boy had turned around. It was as though he felt something happening outside his private World. Then this young man did a 360 degree turn that would have impressed a figure skater’s coach. I don’t know how the young teenaged boy did it; but he reached the elderly man before I did and I had a head start, boy I need to work out more! The young man wrapped his arms around the elderly man and caught him before he hit the ground. This young stranger, carefully pulled the Old Timer up and held him until his legs steady. He asked the Old Timer was he okay and he assured the young stranger that he was fine and thanked him for his help. I, in turn asked the elderly man where was he going and did he have far to go? He pointed at a house two houses from where we all were standing. So with me on one side and the young stranger on the other; we both walked this disable man to his house. The man’s daughter greeted us at the door with tears in her eyes. She told me and the young teenaged boy that her father suffered from Alzheimer’s disease and occasionally he would wander out of the house without supervision. She was very happy that we had returned her father to her without any harm to him. She thanked me and turned to thank the young teenaged boy, but he was gone. We looked around, but he was no where to be seen. We all were puzzled because we had not seen the young man leave, how could we? He was standing right beside us and the gate was closed. We would have heard him leave because I remembered that the gate squeaked loudly as you open and close it. Well, I bid the daughter and her father a goodbye and wished them well. I walked slowly back to my own house, I was in deep thought. I had been asking myself on numerous occasions, “what was wrong with today’s Youths” and I had almost witnessed an elderly disable man get severely hurt. That young man that day instilled in me that there is still hope for the Youths of today. I don’t know whether he was an Angel in disguise or just a young man who knows how to make a fast and quiet exit; but I do know my heart is content, because I now know that as long as there is one Youth who will take the right stand and steps forward. There is HOPE
SO WHAT DO YOU THINK?
I remember when you use to walk among billions of people each day.
Quietly, but with passion and strength, creating your own passage way.
Even though you weren’t an actress, you played the part of many roles.
Each one so organized with precision, so beautiful, so bold.
You took on both genders as woman and man.
You stayed through the joy, the pain and the hardship when the significant other ran.
You never missed a step, never missed a beat.
Never giving into negative influences, never giving into defeat.
You pulled me off of that imaginary pedestal, when I wasn’t in the right.
And when others would beat me down viciously, you would raise me up higher than an eagle in flight.
Your footsteps may be invisible to me and the outside world today.
But, I know that the residue of your pure goodness and graciously will allow me to carry the torch the rest of the way.
